CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“What is it?” asked Whiskey staring at his friend, and then back at Tru.

“It’s copies of encrypted e-mail communications between Thomas Xi and Brian Chauvin. He’s asking for detailed maps of the pipelines within COG and the locations of the oil rigs.” Ghost continued to read the communications, his frown deepening as he did so. “Xi is indicating that they could both benefit from a joint venture.”

“What kind of joint venture?” asked Ace.

“I don’t know. There’s also a small slip drive. We need to keep these papers for Ivan’s review and dig into this. Xi’s family isn’t in the oil and gas industry. They have their hands in construction, shipping, and of course all forms of shit and illegal activities, but not oil and gas.”

“But…” All eyes turned to Tru as she started to speak. She immediately shut her mouth, blushing as the faces looked at her.

“Do not be afraid to speak here,” said Noah. “We all have equal say in this room.”

“Well, I don’t know as much as all of you, but if they were in construction wouldn’t they perhaps want contracts for the pipelines themselves or the refineries? I mean…I’ve lived in Louisiana long enough to know how much money is made from that industry.”

The men slowly grinned at Tru, her keen mind leading them down a path that no one thought of earlier.

“You may be spot on, Tru,” smiled Ghost. “Combine that with the fact that the Xi’s were not in good standing with the Chinese government, they might have been attempting to make themselves more useful. Are Brian’s parents alive?”

“I think so,” she said nodding. “Last I heard they’d retired and moved to the Cayman’s or St. Thomas or something. That was a few years back, but Brian was supposedly running everything, although that’s beyond my comprehension. Brian was reckless and not very business savvy. Five times in the last six years, COG had a reduction in work force. It wasn’t advertised or discussed on the news, but I knew because some of their people were applying for work at the Parish. I always thought it was odd that his parents didn’t return to help him run for office or check on the business.”

“That does seem odd,” said Suzette. “I didn’t know them well, but the Chauvin’s seemed a tight knit family once upon a time. Mr. Chauvin got Brian out of all kinds of problems when he was…damn, I’m sorry Tru.” Tru waved her off with a painful smile. “I saw Mr. and Mrs. Chauvin about ten years ago at a charity function when I was first with the FBI. They looked old, but healthy.”

“Are we certain they’re still alive?” asked Ace. All eyes turned to look at him as he shrugged. “Hey, you were all thinking it. I mean, if they’ve been on the islands for five years and no one has seen them, how do we know they’re even living?”

“He has a point,” said Suzette. “Brian could have been telling everyone they were alive and well, enjoying a well-deserved retirement.
